All our doctors are available for general consultation, however each physician also has special interest expert areas. These complementary sub-specialty interests of our physicians enable our practice to expertly treat all patients. Meet our medical team
Dr Chris Zappala
Dr Zappala is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician. He achieved his MBBS(Hons) at the University of Queensland and underwent his advanced training at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital. Dr Zappala worked for two years in London at the Royal Brompton Hospital where he began his interest and research in interstitial lung disease and pulmonary hypertension. He has an active interest in airways disease and sleep apnoea also.
His research interests include examining how change in serial pulmonary function and chest imaging describe disease behaviour and predict survival in interstitial lung disease, epidemiology of pulmonary hypertension, assessing diffuse lung diseases at baseline.
Dr Zappala is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Australian Medical Association. He is currently the Vice-President of the Australian Medical Association.

Dr Farzad Bashirzadeh
Dr Bashirzadeh is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician. He obtained his medical degree in Iran and completed his FRACP training at The Canberra Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital in Brisbane. Farzad has completed further traning in interventioal bronchoscopy including Thoraxklinik Heidelberg and robotic bronchoscopy at Intuitive Surgical in US.
Farzad’s main interest area is interventional pulmonology, including diagnosic and managemt of lung cancer using endobronchial ultrasound, narrow band image (NBI) bronchoscopy, bronchial stenting and medical thoracoscopy. He performs Endobronchial lung volume reduction for management of severe COPD in both public and private.
Farzad consults for diagnosis and management of lung cancer, asthma, emphysema, sleep disordered breathing, chronic cough, sarcoidosis, pleural disease and other respiratory conditions.
Dr Bashirzadeh is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society.

Dr Geoff Fanning
Queensland trained Respiratory and Sleep Physician. He completed his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 2009. Dr Fanning undertook his respiratory training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Logan Hospital and completed his Sleep Fellowship at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Dr Fanning currently holds Staff Specialist Respiratory and Sleep Physician positions at the Mater Public Hospital and Logan Hospital.
Dr Fanning’s interests include emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, bronchiectasis, pleural disease and lung cancer. In addition, he is interested in both respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders.
Dr Fanning is trained in bronchoscopy, including endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), and pleural disease management. He is committed to providing a high standard of care to his patients, with consideration of their individual circumstances and practical needs. Dr Fanning has a strong focus on communication with patients, family, and the wider care team.

Dr Tim Baird
Dr Timothy Baird is a Queensland trained Respiratory and Sleep Physician who has recently commenced practice on the Sunshine Coast.
Dr Baird graduated from the University of Queensland in 2008 and subsequently underwent specialist Respiratory and Sleep Medicine training at the Princess Alexander, Nambour General and Greenslopes Private Hospitals. Further to his respiratory and sleep training, Dr Baird also completed a Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and has undertaken volunteer work as a medical officer in rural Papua New Guinea.
Post being admitted as a specialist to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2017, Dr Baird underwent an international fellowship at the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, United Kingdom, where he developed further skills in complex lung infections, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis. Upon returning to Australia in 2019, Dr Baird has taken up a consultant position at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in addition to commencing private practice at Pulse Oceanside Medical in Birtinya.
Dr Baird has a passion for bronchiectasis and respiratory infections, particularly non-tuberculous mycobacterial disease. In addition to these interests, Dr Baird consults in all other areas of respiratory and sleep medicine including asthma, COPD, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, sleep apnoea, and non-respiratory sleep disorders. He is skilled in bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and pleural disease management.
Dr Baird remains actively involved in research and has published several international articles in addition to giving numerous presentations at local, national and international meetings. He is a current member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, The European Respiratory Society, the Australasian Sleep Association, and the Lung Foundation of Australia.
Dr Michael Bint
Dr Bint graduated with honours from the University of Queensland in 1978. He was awarded his post graduate FRACP in 1985 and commenced a Clinical Research Fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital. He has been involved in research projects primarily associated with lung cancer and was presented with an Inaugural Clinical Research Fellowship by the Queensland Cancer Fund in 1986.
Dr Andrew Pattison
Dr Pattison graduated from the University of Queensland in 2007. He completed specialty training in Respiratory Medicine at The Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital and the Mater Hospital Brisbane, followed by a Sleep Medicine fellowship at The Prince Charles Hospital. After being admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2016, he subsequently completed a fellowship in Interventional Pulmonology at Toronto General Hospital in Canada.
Dr Pattison has special interests in thoracic malignancy, pleural disease, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) and other advanced bronchoscopic techniques. He also has extensive experience in the management of all other general respiratory and sleep disorders.
Dr Pattison is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Australasian Sleep Association, the European Respiratory Society, the World Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer.
Dr James Anderson
Dr James Anderson graduated from the University of Queensland in 2008 and was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2017. He undertook specialty training in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast. Subsequently he completed fellowships in Sleep Medicine at The Prince Charles Hospital and in the Advanced Lung Disease Unit at Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth.
Dr Anderson is a Staff Specialist at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Senior Lecturer with Griffith University School of Medicine. In 2018 he was awarded a research scholarship by the Pulmonary Hypertension Society of Australia and New Zealand and in 2019 completed a Master of Biostatistics through the University of Sydney. He has commenced private practice at Pulse Oceanside Medical at Birtinya. He is experienced with all respiratory and sleep disorders including bronchoscopy and pleural procedures.
Dr Anderson is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, Australasian Sleep Association, Asia Pacific Society of Respirology, European Respiratory Society and the Pulmonary Hypertension Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Dr John Goddard
Dr John Goddard is a Respiratory and Sleep Physician practicing on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Dr Goddard graduated with first class honours from the University of Queensland in 2011. He undertook specialist training at The Prince Charles Hospital and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Dr Goddard completed a Fellowship in Sleep Medicine at The Prince Charles Hospital and was admitted to Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2018.
Dr Goddard is a Staff Specialist at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and is actively involved in clinical research and teaching. Dr Goddard consults in all areas of respiratory and sleep medicine and is skilled in the management of pleural disorders and use of flexible bronchoscopy including endobronchial ultrasound. Dr Goddard is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Australasian Sleep Association and the Australian Medical Association.

Ashton has several years of experience as a Practice Manager where she creates new innovative procedures to streamline the business practices. In her spare time Ashton enjoys spending time with her young daughter and husband outdoors camping and fishing.
Carolyn is disciplined and hardworking, where her main focus is patient care. Carolyn is from the north of England and brings with her a wealth of knowledge, with a background in Human Resources along with previously working as a teacher aid. Carolyn enjoys various crafts including card making is her spare time, she is extremely talented.
Cindy is calm and nurturing, she has a strong focus on patient care and satisfaction. Cindy has exceptional multitasking skills and highly organised. Besides work, Cindy has two teenage sons who she enjoys spending time with on their rural property.
Beata is a quiet achiever, who comes from a background of finance. Beata has high attention to detail and is a perfectionist. She is multiskilled and spreads her ability across secretarial work and accounts. In her spare time Beata has three young daughters who enjoy competing in gymnastics and swimming.
Karen an extremely devoted individual with a stellar background in scheduling appointments and performing administrative tasks. Karen is a self-motivated individual who ensures all tasks are completed to a high standard. In Karen’s spare time she enjoys going for walks with her dog and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
